The Indian Premier League (IPL) league phase divided into two virtual groups for the first time since its inception in 2008. The IPL Governing Council announced on Friday that IPL 2022 will begin on March 26 and conclude on May 29.

The 70 matches will play at four different venues in Mumbai and Pune. The IPL’s league stage has always been play in a home-away format, with each team facing the same opponent twice, but that will change in the 15th edition.

The number of teams in the IPL 2022 has been increase to ten with the addition of two new franchises – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants – but the number of matches per team has remained at 14.

To determine the above, teams were divided into two virtual groups based on the number of IPL Championships won by the respective teams, followed by the number of Final matches played by the respective teams.

Virtual Groups in the IPL 2022 Explained

CSK, SRH, RCB, PBKS, and Gujarat Titans will be in Group B.

In group A Mumbai Indians (Team 1) with five titles, has been placed as 1st team. Correspondingly, in group B, the first team is CSK (Team 2) which has 4 titles.

KKR is again placed in Group A, with two titles, and SRH is placed in Group B, with a single title.

Team 5 again in group A is RR (1 title) and its corresponding Team 6 in group B is RCB, which has played 3 finals.

Team 7 in group A is DC, which has 1 final appearance and 2 play-offs while corresponding Team 8 in group B is PBKS with one final appearance.

New teams Lucknow Super Giants are Team 9 in Group A, and Gujarat Titans are Team 10 in Group B.

IPL 2022 Playing Schedule – Who Will Face Whom?

Each team will play twice, once with the other teams in their group and once with the team in the next row in the second group. They will only play once during the season with the rest of the teams in the second group.

In Group A, for example, MI will play two matches each against KKR, RR, DC, and LSG. MI will also play two games against CSK and one against each of the other teams in Group B.

Similarly, in Group B, RCB will face CSK, SRH, PBKS, and GT twice. RCB will also play two matches against RR and one against each of the other teams in Group A.
