Team India chief selector Chetan Sharma stated in the squad announcement on Saturday. That the duo will need to find a way back to the national side through good performances in the Ranji Trophy. Both Pujara and Rahane have struggled in 2022 due to a poor run of form. According to Sunil Gavaskar, former India captain, time is not on Pujara and Rahane’s side, and the duo will find it “difficult” to play for India again.

“Why not have them return?” If they maintain their current form and score 200-250 points in each Ranji Trophy match, a return is unquestionably possible. But after this Test series, there is only one more Test in England. follow by the T20 World Cup, so we will be in November and December (for the next Test).” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

“So, because they will be in their mid-30s, I believe time will not be on their side.” He continue.

When ask if he expect the veteran duo to be fired, Gavaskar said, “This was expected because if they had scored a century or someone had knocked 80-90 in the three Test matches they played in South Africa, it would have been a different story. Yes, Ajinkya Rahane hit a half-century, but other than that, not many runs were score when they were expect to score.”
