In the 33rd Indian Premier League 2023 encounter at Eden Gardens on April 23, Chennai Super Kings trounced Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers, posting a score of 235/4 while batting first. The top five hitters for Chennai Super Kings hit 18 sixes, leading the team to the highest total in IPL 2023.
Fans at Eden Gardens turned ‘yellow’ to show their support for the visiting team’s captain, as the crowd went mad and began screaming ‘Dhoni Dhoni’ when the former Indian captain stepped out to face the final two deliveries of the first innings. Not just supporters, but Kolkata Knight Riders’ star hitter Venkatesh Iyer appeared ecstatic when the crowd wanted a six from Dhoni on the final ball of the innings. The cameraman turned his lens on Iyer, who was seen enjoying the chant ‘Dhoni Dhoni’ but then tried to hide his excitement when he realized the camera was on him.

CSK hitters wreck havoc to set an IPL 2023 first innings total record
Meanwhile, at Eden Gardens, the Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and chose to bowl first. However, it was a riot from the visitors hitters, as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway scored 73 runs for the opening wicket in just 45 balls. Suyash Sharma’s wicket of Ruturaj, who hit 35 off 20 balls, gave Kolkata a breakthrough in the eighth over.
Conway, on the other hand, got his fourth consecutive fifty in IPL 2023 to keep the charge going. Conway batted for 56 runs off 40 balls before being caught off Varun Chakravarthy’s delivery in the 13th over. Ajinkya Rahane maintained the pressure on with a spectacular 71* off 29 balls, which included six fours and five sixes.
In the middle, Shivam Dube and Rahane put on an 85-run stand for the third wicket in 32 balls. Dube hit a 20-ball fifty and Jadeja smacked 18 from eight balls to ensure a massive first innings total at Eden Gardens.
