Shikhar Dhawan of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) scored his 50th IPL fifty-two against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). On Monday, May 8, the two franchises faced off at the famous Eden Gardens in Kolkata in match 53 of the ongoing IPL 2023.
PBKS skipper Dhawan chose to bat first after winning the toss. However, the Knight Riders continued to make inroads at regular intervals, leaving Punjab reeling. Despite this, Dhawan continued to guide the team by keeping the scoreboard ticking with his consistent knock.
The seasoned southpaw unleashed a few stunning strikes from his arsenal, including sweeps and reverse sweeps. In addition, he shared a crucial stand with Jitesh Sharma, adding 53 runs for the fourth wicket.
Dhawan reached his half-century in 41 balls, with nine fours and one six. In doing so, the southpaw achieved an impressive milestone by scoring his 50th fifty in the IPL.
His innings, however, came to an end when his adversary, Nitish Rana, bowled a fullish length ball that he miscued and was caught by Vaibhav Arora at long-on. The 37-year-old is having a fantastic season, having scored 349 runs with a superb average of 58.17 in eight appearances so far, including an undefeated 99.

PBKS is vying for a play-off spot as they face KKR in a critical match.
In the current season, Punjab has won five games and lost five in their ten group stage appearances. Punjab are sixth in the IPL Points Table with a terrible Net Run Rate (NRR) of -0.472.
Punjab will be looking to complete a double against KKR after defeating the latter in the first match of the season, which was shortened due to rain. Furthermore, with the matches approaching thick and fast, Punjab will need to win their remaining games to guarantee a spot in the top-tier league playoffs.
