Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has reacted to ex-Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor’s. Explosive confessions on Twitter on Monday about being approached by bookies in India. His involvement with cocaine, and how he was blackmailed by the bookies as a result. Gambhir wrote in his column for The Times Of India newspaper about the need for more protection for whistleblowers who report on a “corrupt approach.”

“Brendan Taylor’s admission of a delay in reporting a corrupt approach has piqued my interest and conscience. When it comes to wrongdoing, I have an absolute zero tolerance policy “Gambhir penned.

“Taylor’s statement made me feel the same way: disappointed, disgusted, and angry. I read it once but it did not enrage me. I went back and read it again, and it was exactly the same. When I read it for the third time, the emotions were different. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not a fan of Taylor. I’m only concerned about the circumstances that forced him, a father of four children. To delay reporting the incident to the International Cricket Council Anti-Corruption Unit out of fear for his and his family’s safety. Taylor is a sportsman, not a hard-nosed criminal, and his faculties would support him if six people barged into his hotel room with the threat of releasing a video in which he was allegedly consuming a prohibited substance.” Gambhir added

Taylor stated in a statement on Monday that, despite the delay in reporting the matter to the ICC, he did not fix any matches. Taylor, Zimbabwe’s second highest ODI run-getter with 6684 runs, retired from international cricket last year.

Gambhir went on to say that people who report corrupt practices should be given more protection. And he also asked the authorities to be lenient on Taylor if he was not involved in any wrongdoing.

“These corrupt men aren’t working in isolation, I’m sure. They appear to be part of an organized group the majority of the time. What if someone had attempted to harm Taylor or his family physically? Is there a provision in place to provide security to cricketers who report a corrupt approach but are concerned about their or their family’s safety? Is there a network that activates its security at the local level? “Gambhir inquired.

“Taylor admitted that he never succumbed to the pressures of corruptors and never did anything wrong. If this is true, authorities may be able to ease up on him. If he is corrupt, the law must be followed “Gambhir expressed his thoughts.
