The right-handed batter put on a batting exhibition, scoring 57 runs in only 28 pitches. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan is blown away by Iyer’s performance and believes the youngster has silence his detractors.

“This guy has a lot of swag.” It’s fun to watch this boy when he’s in shape. He doesn’t stay in one spot for the big shots he plays. But the balance he generates is his own ability. The non-looker six he hits the most appeals to me. He hit two sixes off the slower ones, one off Karunaratne and the other off Chameera. “He answered the critics with his bat; you don’t need to answer with your tongue,” Pathan said during a Star Sports interview.

Shreyas has scored 662 runs in 34 T20Is so far, with an average of 30.09 and a strike rate of 137.06. Meanwhile, former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar, who was also on the panel, believes the 27-year-old can be Kohli’s ideal back-up in T20Is.

“The bench is growing in strength. Shreyas is consistently sent to bat at No. 3 in the order. So, God forbid, if Virat Kohli is injure in a match, I believe he can become a very good option at No. 3, and that is probably where the team management has their sights set on Shreyas Iyer,” Bangar said in an interview with Star Sports.
