Shreyas Iyer has been named KKR’s captain for the upcoming season in the IPL 2022. In the mega auction, KKR paid a whopping INR 12.25 crore for Iyer.
Iyer had chosen to take part in the mega auction. And he was one of the most suitable captaincy options available.
At that point, it was obvious that he would be named team captain. Shreyas Iyer has a proven track record as an IPL captain, having led the Delhi Capitals for more than two seasons. After taking over from Gautam Gambhir in the middle of the season, Iyer led the franchise to the IPL playoffs in 2019 and 2020.
Meanwhile, KKR has parted ways with Eoin Morgan, who led them to a stunning final appearance last season. Unfortunately, England’s cricketer was unable to score runs with the bat throughout the season, and he went unsold in the auction.
Shreyas Iyer is the sixth captain of KKR.
Shreyas Iyer is KKR’s sixth captain in the IPL’s history. Previous captains have included Sourav Ganguly, Gautam Gambhir, Brendon McCullum, Dinesh Karthik, and Eoin Morgan. Under Gambhir’s inspired leadership, the franchise won the coveted IPL trophy twice, in 2012 and 2014. However, they came within a whisker of winning the trophy last season and will be hoping to do so again under new captain Shreyas Iyer.
In terms of the auction, KKR made some wise purchases, including Pat Cummins, Nitish Rana, and Alex Hales, among others. Iyer is currently a member of India’s T20I squad for a three-match series against the West Indies. He’ll most likely be in action on Wednesday (February 16), as he’s expected to make the playing XI at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.
