Recalls IPL’s “First Bidding War” For MS Dhoni

Former IPL auctioneer Richard Madley shared an interesting story about how Dhoni started “the first bidding war” in the tournament’s auction history, with CSK buying the former captain for 1.5 million dollars, ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. Madley opened up about the inaugural IPL 2008 auction in a candid conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin. He also mentioned how the Rajasthan Royals (RR), who won the 2008 edition, made a “smart move” by acquiring Shane Warne.

“Shane Warne, an Australian bowler, was the second player to come out that day, and I thought, okay, here’s Warnie, now this will be interesting. His starting point was accurate. If you recall, we sold them in US dollars. We hadn’t switched to rupees yet. Warnie had a base price of 400,000 US dollars, and I believe that’s what he was sold for. He sold to the Rajasthan Royals for the reserve price. At the time, I thought it was a wise decision “, he explained.

The arrival of Dhoni, whom Madley described as the “ultimate all-rounder,” increased the auction’s intensity and excitement, according to Madley.

“Then the man himself, the ultimate all-rounder Mahendra Singh Dhoni, came out of the bag, and there we saw the first of many bidding wars in the IPL auctions,” he said.

Last season, Dhoni led CSK to their fourth IPL title, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final.

In addition to Dhoni, CSK has retained Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, and Ruturaj Gaikwad for the IPL 2022 season.
