England are set for a busy year and their summer starts on Wednesday when they host New Zealand at Lord’s in the first of two Tests.
The Three Lions are also set to face Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India as well in a packed schedule, before the small matters of the T20 World Cup and Ashes series against Australia later in the year.
New Zealand of course will be using their battle with England as preparation for the World Test Championship final against India, which takes place almost immediately after the second Test at Edgbaston later this month.
England had enjoyed a good run of Test series results, winning in South Africa before enjoying back-to-back successes over West Indies and Pakistan last summer, while they started off this year with a convincing 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka.
Of course, things didn’t run quite as smoothly in India, despite winning the first Test, but back on home turf, the Three Lions have been installed as 5/6 favourites to open this series with a win.
New Zealand have not played as much Test cricket as England recently and being away from home, they are priced at 7/2 to open the two-Test series with a win, while the draw is on offer at 17/4.
England are far from full strength, having taken the decision to rest the likes of Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow in the first place.
Injuries to Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer may be more keenly felt, although they may have been rested anyway, but Ben Foakes has also been ruled out, having torn his hamstring, and his wait for a first Test on home soil goes on.
New Zealand are gearing up for the World Test Championship final against India so will be taking this assignment seriously, although squad rotation might come into play for the second Test.
The Black Caps have enjoyed the upper hand over England in recent meetings, having won the last two Test series – both in New Zealand – while they earned a 1-1 draw the last time they played in English conditions in 2015.
That represents as good a run as any for the tourists as they have only ever won five Test series against the Three Lions with the most recent of two victories on these shores coming way back in 1999.

England remain in a state of flux, particularly considering the batting line-up – it is far from secure, only captain Joe Root is certain of a place and they have largely underperformed for a long period of time.

They have been performing well enough over a sustained period of time to have qualified for the World Test Championship final, and they will be as comfortable as anyone in the conditions they will face.

The 29-year-old has notched up scores of 174, 56, 11 and 157 in his last four innings and his middle-order slot will protect him from the swinging new-ball perhaps more than others. At the prices, he is worth a chance.

England plays host to New Zealand at Twickenham for this Autumn Internationals. The home side bounced back from their defeat to Argentina with a crushing 52-13 win over Japan while the visitors had an excellent come from behind win over Scotland in their last match. England will be hoping to continue with the form they showed last week although they will never be give the space or time afforded to them by the Japanese. The home team will need to match the physicality of the All Blacks if they are to have any chance of winning the match. England will have fond memories of their last meeting with New Zealand as they beat them 19-7 in the World Cup semi-final. Players like Manu Tuilagi and Maro Itoje will need to repeat their performance from that day if England are to gain successive wins over the All Blacks for the first time.
New Zealand have a score to settle with the English after they were dumped out of the last World Cup by Eddie Jones men. The visitors will be hoping for a better start than in the last match where they needed an incredible comeback in the last quarter to win the match. The return of Richie Mounga and Aaron Smith to the starting team will provide them with the attacking fluency which was missing for long periods in the last match. After a patchy start to the year in which they lost at home for the first time to both Ireland and Argentina they are looking more like the All Blacks of old.

It’s a testament as to the state of Test match cricket in England right now that Lord’s is not sold out across all five days of what is always such a special occasion, the first Test of an English summer at the Home of Cricket. Captain and batting lynchpin Kane Williamson is in arguably the worst form of his career and his side are coming off the back of a shock defeat against a County Select XI in a four-day warm up match at Chelmsford.
This match will likely be determined by England’s top order batting performance and specifically whether the likes of Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope can garner significant scores, with the former under pressure following a poor start to the County Championship for Kent and the latter set to bat at three for the first time in his career. The likes of Anderson and Broad should find success against New Zealand’s batters at Lord’s, a ground which has been good to both over the years and it’s whether the hosts can back up the performance of their bowlers. Ultimately, all three results are very much possible in what is a very tough match in which to predict a result, especially with rain forecast across the whole of Day 4.
