ENG vs SA: England names an XI for the Lord’s Test. The first Test is scheduled to begin on August 17.
England and South Africa will face off in a three-match Test series, and England has announced their playing XI for the first match, which will take place at Lord’s on Wednesday, August 17. The final two Tests will begin on August 25 at Old Trafford in Manchester and on September 8 at The Oval in London.
England last played a Test against India in the first week of July at Edgbaston, and Ben Stokes’ side have made just one change from that game as wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes, who was out of the team against India due to Covid-19, returns to the playing XI to replace Sam Billings. England have three specialist fast bowlers in James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Matthew Potts, and one frontline spinner in Jack Leach.
This will be England’s third assignment under captain Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, following the series against New Zealand and the rescheduled fifth Test against India. They thrashed the Kiwis 3-0 and drew the series with India 2-2 to go on a four-match winning streak in the format.
England is seventh in the current World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23.
Five wins, four draws, and seven losses in 16 games. In the ICC Test Rankings, they are ranked fourth, one spot below South Africa.
Meanwhile, South Africa leads the WTC table with five wins and two losses in seven games. Last month, England lost the T20I series 2-1 and drew the ODI series 1-1 against South Africa. Dean Elgar’s team played a warmup game against the England Lions before the first Test, which they lost by an innings and 56 runs.
