Despite having most of the players on the higher side on the age-factor, Chennai Super Kings is known to set high fitness and fielding standards on the field. However, it was not to be in their most recent match, against Delhi Capitals, and that resulted in a narrow defeat. With that loss, they dropped to the sixth spot on the ladder and will need to make the most out of their remaining five matches to progress to the next round.

While Chennai have come closer to their perfect eleven, the execution and some strange decisions have certainly been a cause of their downfall. It made little sense to bring in Kedar Jadhav for Piyush Chawla against Delhi Capitals as Jadhav didn’t get a chance to contribute and CSK were found a bowler short at the end. While the extend of Bravo’s injury is still uncertain, we might finally see Josh Hazlewood in action for the Super Kings in the upcoming match.

CSK will be happy with the way their batsmen have done in the last two matches. The move to open with Sam Curran has added much-needed depth to their batting along with the intent that didn’t exist in the first half of the tournament. Faf du Plessis has looked in tremendous touch since the beginning of the competition and with Shane Watson slowly finding his feet, batting looks settled for the Super Kings. With multiple all-rounders available, Chennai Super Kings have a batting lineup that goes deep. Kedar Jadhav proved to be an unnecessary addition against the Capitals and we might well see him being replaced yet again in the upcoming match.

One would have thought that as the surface would get slower, Chennai’s bowling would have an increasingly vital role play. However, it hasn’t been the case. CSK’s bowling has blown hot and cold so far in the tournament. Although we have seen occasional glimpses of brilliance, they are yet to click as a unit. The possible selection of Josh Hazlewood might just solve the issues they are having with the ball. The surface at Abu Dhabi is much like the surfaces CSK thrives on and we expect them to put up a better show on Monday.

While their position on the points table suggests otherwise, there aren’t a lot of things that the Super Kings are doing wrong. With not much time remaining in the league stage, they would want to plug those holes quickly. On paper, they appear to be a decent side that has almost all bases covered. Having said that, they’d need to improve massively when it comes to execution, especially in the field. With MS Dhoni in charge of things, they have high chances to come back strongly and if they do, not many teams are capable of tackling the Super Kings on slow surfaces.

Along with Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals are undoubtedly the most unpredictable side of the tournament. They have managed to fetch wins from hopeless situations and lost matches that they should have won with remarkable ease. Owing to this unpredictability, they are currently placed at the second from the bottom spot on the ladder and will need to play out of their skins to qualify from here. They certainly have the team to do so and it will be interesting to see how things pan out for them going forward.

Perhaps the biggest reason for inconsistency in Rajasthan’s run in the tournament so far is their inconsistent tactics. They have shuffled around position a little too often and the players haven’t really adapted to the eventual roles that they have to play. The decision to open with Robin Uthappa against the Royal Challengers proved to be a masterstroke as RR got their best powerplay of the tournament with Uthappa going all guns blazing. Having said that, Ben Stokes looks a little uncertain at the top and we might see Jos Buttler back at the top of the order soon.

After a string of rare failures, Steve Smith scored a fantastic fifty and would like to continue to build on it. He looked at his best in his nifty innings as Rajasthan Royals finished their innings on a high note. Their batting had looked a bit unstable in their last seven matches and this knock by Smith should imbibe a lot of confidence among the team. With Tewatia, Samson, Buttler, and Stokes in the playing eleven, Rajasthan Royals have a terrific batting unit, at least on paper.

Up until their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Royals’ bowling appeared to be their stronger suit. It was the case against RCB as well, but a poor 19th over by Jaydev Unadkat cost them the match. In the last few overs, Jaydev Unadkat has contributed little to Rajasthan’s wins and have been a cause of defeats on many occasions. He doesn’t really have any variation in his bowling and the batsmen can line up for the slower cutters he usually bowls. He has already had a long rope in this edition as well and we expect him to be replaced by Varun Aaron or Mayank Markande in the upcoming encounter.

Just like the Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals are an immaculately balanced side on paper. They seem to have all departments covered and are lacking in execution. Had it not been a couple of wayward games, which they lost from winning positions, they would be sitting in the top half. They have some terrific players in their playing eleven and it is only a matter of time before we see fireworks from them again. If the Royals can perform to their potential, they could be an unstoppable force, not just in the upcoming match, but also in the matches to follow.
